DTU

The Technical University of Denmark (DTU) contributes to the RADAR project by advancing Life Cycle Inventory (LCI), Life Cycle Impact Assessment (LCIA) and Absolute Environmental Sustainability Assessment (AESA) methods for biobased chemicals. First, DTU will develop a generic framework for predicting lifecycle inventories of biochemicals at full commercial scale, using data available at low Technology Readiness Levels (TRLs). Second, DTU will develop new comparative toxicity potentials for a broad range of biobased chemicals, aligned with recent global recommendations for ecotoxicity characterization. Third, DTU will propose a novel downscaling approach to enhance AESA of biobased chemicals, addressing chemical use and functions they offer, going beyond conventional practices such as grandfathering or economic-based downscaling. These methods, while generic, will be applied in practice to sustainability assessments of epoxy resins, flame retardants, and surfactants made from or with RADAR biochemicals. The project aligns with DTU’s expertise in LCIA, prospective LCA, and absolute environmental sustainability assessment of emerging technologies.
